Moxibustion Therapy | Warming the meridians and dispelling cold, supporting Yang and consolidating the foundation

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is one of the oldest therapies in Traditional Chinese Medicine, with a history spanning thousands of years. It utilizes the warmth generated by burning moxa wool to stimulate specific acupoints on the body. Through the principle of "warming and unblocking the meridians and dispelling cold pathogens," it achieves therapeutic and health-preserving effects.

The *Huangdi Neijing* states, "Where acupuncture fails, moxibustion is appropriate." This means that when acupuncture and moxibustion are ineffective, moxibustion is often a better choice. Especially for problems such as deficiency-cold, dampness, and poor blood circulation, the warming and tonifying effects of moxibustion are irreplaceable.

The four core effects of moxibustion

1. Warming the Meridians and Dispelling Cold

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that "cold causes contraction," meaning that cold can cause the meridians to constrict and the flow of qi and blood to become sluggish, leading to "pain due to obstruction." The warmth of moxibustion can dispel cold from the body, making it especially suitable for people with cold hands and feet, and those whose pain worsens with cold.

2. Strengthening Yang and Consolidating the Foundation

Yang energy is the core energy for the body to resist disease. Those who are chronically fatigued, weak from prolonged illness, or elderly and frail often have insufficient Yang energy. Moxibustion can replenish Yang energy, enhance immunity, and achieve the effect of "when the body's vital energy is abundant, pathogens cannot invade."

3. Dissolving Stasis and Nodules

For pain and nodules (such as muscle knots and dowager's hump) caused by chronic strain, qi stagnation and blood stasis, moxibustion can promote local blood circulation, soften adhesions, and help the body repair itself.

4. Disease Prevention and Health Maintenance

An ancient text states, "To maintain good health, keep Zusanli (ST36) moist." Regular moxibustion on acupoints such as Zusanli can strengthen the body and prevent disease, and is an important method of "treating disease before it occurs" in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
